Held Back becomes Overwhelmed

What this change means

Three middle lines move, and the image turns harsh: the Mountain becomes Water, the upper Water becomes Lake, and what was hard going becomes a lake drained dry. The two judgments share the reading. Held Back describes obstacles met step after step, and the habit of stopping, stepping back, and seeking allies. The resulting hexagram, 47 Overwhelmed, is blunter: the wrong people may surround you, your words may not be believed, and obstacles close in. What's left is to accept the moment and wait for better conditions, leaning on the inner light you carry. Held together, they ask for two things at once. Keep reaching for support from people who share your aims, even if it's slow to come, and don't let outer pressure persuade you that you're empty. Your inner resources are real. Rest your weight there, avoid arguing your case where nobody listens, and let time change the conditions.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 39 Held Back

Every time you advance, something blocks you, forcing you to stop, step back, and look for help from like-minded people who give you their support. That way you'll get past the obstacles one by one until the final victory.

The southwest is favorable; the northeast is not. It is favorable to see the great person. Constancy brings good fortune.

  2. The judgment of 47 Overwhelmed

Things are very much against you: the wrong people surround you, no one believes what you say, and obstacles hem you in. All you can do is accept it and wait for better conditions to come. Your only resource is the inner light that lives in you; turn to that strength to hold you up right now.

Success. For the great person, constancy brings good fortune. No fault. They speak and are not believed.

  3. Line 2 of 39 Held Back

It's time to face the difficulties, which seem to grow as you advance. Still, if your actions go hand in hand with inner integrity, you'll succeed in the end.

The king's servant, in hardship upon hardship, and not of their own doing.

  4. Line 3 of 39 Held Back

The right thing now is to step back from the obstacles and return to normal conditions, with the people who love you, until the time to act comes.

    Going: hardship. Coming: a return.

  5. Line 4 of 39 Held Back

You won't get past the obstacles on your own. It's time to return to more stable conditions and look for support from like-minded people; with their help you'll succeed.

Going: hardship. Coming: joined with others.
