What this change means

Thunder now sits in the middle of the lake, where before water stood on a mountain: three lines move, and the blocked path becomes a question of when to lead and when to follow. With three lines changing, both judgments speak equally. Held Back says that each push forward meets resistance, and that the way through is to pause, step back, and accept support from people who share your aims. The resulting hexagram, 17 Adapting, asks you to see what place life wants you to take right now and to act genuinely from there, sometimes at the front, sometimes behind someone else. Read together, they suggest that the obstacle may be partly one of position. Stop insisting on leading every step. Follow where following makes sense, and lead where you're truly needed. That flexibility tends to bring more support and more real authority than forcing your way ever did.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 39 Held Back

Every time you advance, something blocks you, forcing you to stop, step back, and look for help from like-minded people who give you their support. That way you'll get past the obstacles one by one until the final victory.

The southwest is favorable; the northeast is not. It is favorable to see the great person. Constancy brings good fortune.

  2. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  3. Line 1 of 39 Held Back

A strategic retreat in the face of obstacles will help you reflect, come up with new strategies, and act when conditions are right.

    Going: hardship. Coming: praise.

  4. Line 3 of 39 Held Back

The right thing now is to step back from the obstacles and return to normal conditions, with the people who love you, until the time to act comes.

    Going: hardship. Coming: a return.

  5. Line 4 of 39 Held Back

You won't get past the obstacles on your own. It's time to return to more stable conditions and look for support from like-minded people; with their help you'll succeed.

Going: hardship. Coming: joined with others.
