Right Action becomes Immaturity

What this change means

A spring breaks out beneath the mountain as the third, fifth and top lines move. Their judgments are balanced. 48 Right Action points out that chances are present and slip away while you wait. The resulting hexagram, 4 Immaturity, asks you to see that you don't yet have the maturity you need in the area of your question, and to ask for guidance, seek counsel and put it into practice. Together they suggest that one of the resources you're not using is other people's experience. You don't need to have it all figured out to act; you need to learn while acting. Find someone who knows more, listen with humility, and apply what they tell you. A young spring finds its course by flowing, not by waiting. Act decisively on good advice.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  2. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  3. Line 3 of 48 Right Action

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  4. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  5. Line 6 of 48 Right Action

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.
