Right Action becomes Initial Obstacles

What this change means

The whole lower trigram moves, and Wind becomes Thunder: under the water, something starts to stir. With three lines changing, the judgments of both hexagrams count equally. In 48 Right Action, the chances favor you and procrastination squanders them; the point isn't to look for something new but to use what you already have. The resulting hexagram, 3 Initial Obstacles, says this isn't a time to act directly: find allies who can act for you, and watch for the moment to take control back. Read together, they describe a hard start that still needs your hand. Don't wait passively, and don't charge in alone either. Use the resources and people already within reach, let trusted allies represent you where you can't go, and put your threads in order. A difficult beginning is still a beginning, if you don't let the chance go to waste.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  2. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  3. Line 1 of 48 Right Action

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  4. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  5. Line 3 of 48 Right Action

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.
