Right Action becomes Darkness

What this change means

Light sinks into the earth as the first, second and fifth lines move, and the well's clear water goes underground. Each hexagram's judgment matters equally here. The well reminds you that openings exist and procrastination spends them; the resources in hand are the point. The resulting hexagram, 36 Darkness, describes a dark time when you must live alongside the wrong people, protect yourself, keep your integrity and avoid showing your light openly until better times arrive. Together they point to quiet action. You still have resources and opportunities, but this isn't the moment to display them. Use them discreetly, with care for whom you trust. Keep working on what matters without drawing attention, and hold on to your principles. The image says the noble person uses the darkness and remains bright. However long hard times feel, they pass.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  2. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.

  3. Line 1 of 48 Right Action

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  4. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  5. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.
