Darkness becomes Right Action

What this change means

The first, second and fifth lines move, and the Fire below becomes Wind while the Earth above becomes Water: water over wood, the shape of a well. Darkness counsels discretion in a bad season: keep your head down, stay honest, and don't let your talents attract trouble. The resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, says opportunities are on your side, but they're useless if you keep postponing decisions and actions. Use what you already have rather than looking for something new. Weighed together, they warn against letting a low profile turn into paralysis. Stay discreet, but draw from the well. Make the decisions you can make now, quietly. Watch for using hard times as a reason to put everything off. The resources are within reach if you lower the bucket.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.

  2. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  3. Line 1 of 36 Darkness

Trying to move ahead right now will only show you obstacles. Keep persevering on the right path, the one your heart moves you along, without straying from your goal and advancing as far as you can.

The wounded light, in flight, lowers its wings. The noble person is on the road: three days without eating. There is somewhere to go; the host grumbles.

  4. Line 2 of 36 Darkness

Difficulties are growing and circumstances affect you directly, but your firm resolve, acting for a greater good, and contributing as you're able will lead you to victory.

The wounded light: wounded in the left thigh. Rescued with a strong horse. Good fortune.

  5. Line 5 of 36 Darkness

For now you can't withdraw to better circumstances, so you have to stay where you are, with your mind fixed on your goal and a low profile so you don't draw attention.

The wounded light of Jizi. Constancy is favorable.
