Immaturity becomes Right Action

Starting hexagram

What this change means

Water drawn up through wood, the image of a well: as the third, fifth and top lines change, the question of 4 Immaturity becomes how to use what's available. With three lines moving, the reading balances both judgments. The starting judgment counsels humility: you aren't mature enough yet for your aim, so seek advice and apply it.

The resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, says opportunities are on your side, but putting off decisions wastes them; what matters is making good use of what you already have rather than looking for something new. Read together, the judgments warn against endless preparation. Learning is necessary, but at some point it has to become action. Ask for guidance, then decide. Watch for hiding behind your inexperience to avoid starting. Draw from the well that's already in front of you.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  2. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  3. Line 3 of 4 Immaturity

To get what you want, don't submit to strong personalities who belittle you.

Do not take this woman: at the sight of a man of gold, she is no longer her own. Nothing is favorable.

  4. Line 5 of 4 Immaturity

If you recognize your lack of knowledge in the area of your question and seek advice, you'll get good results.

    A child's ignorance. Good fortune.

  5. Line 6 of 4 Immaturity

Accepting the consequences of your actions and correcting what's needed will help you right now.

Striking the ignorant. Being a raider is not favorable; stopping the raider is favorable.
