Right Action becomes After the End

What this change means

Both lower lines move, and the second leads. It points to talent gone soft: you have the qualities for success, yet you've let your effort slip, so what you achieve leaks away like water from a broken jar. Beneath it, the first line adds low spirits, a mood so dark you can't see the chances around you or draw anyone's help. Below, Wind becomes Fire, and the figure becomes water standing over flame. The resulting hexagram, 63 After the End, describes a passing success: things seem to go your way, and then a stretch of stagnation arrives. Taken together, the warning is about holding on. Even when results come, slackness and gloom can drain them. Pick yourself up, renew your effort, and think ahead about the slowdown that tends to follow a win. Preparing for it now is what softens it later.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  2. Line 1 of 48 Right Action

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  3. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  4. The judgment of 63 After the End

You're in a situation where you'll have a passing success: everything seems to be in your favor, and at the end comes a period of stagnation. If you prepare for it ahead of time, you'll be able to soften its effects.

Success in small things. Constancy is favorable. At first, good fortune; in the end, disorder.
