What this change means
Water arriving again and again: the second, fourth, fifth and top lines move, and both trigrams become Water. Of the resulting hexagram, 29 Water, the first and third lines stay still and speak. Its first line says you won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in your current direction without watching what's happening around you. Its third says it's time to stop, watch, and move only when you're sure it will lead somewhere, asking for inner guidance. Coming from Advance, this is a sharp change of pace. Obstacles come one after another, and getting past them takes awareness, not speed. Keep moving like a stream, but don't charge blindly. Watch for fear on one side and recklessness on the other; neither helps. Pause, look, then go.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- Line 1 of 29 Water, which stays still
You won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in the direction you're going, without watching outside circumstances.
Pit upon pit. Entering the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.
- Line 3 of 29 Water, which stays still
It's time to stop, watch and act only when you're sure that moving forward will lead to success. Ask for inner guidance.
Coming and going: pit and pit. Danger, and depth besides. Entering the bottom of the pit. Do not act.
- The judgment of 35 Advance
A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.
The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.
- Line 2 of 35 Advance
Even if at first you don't get help from the person you asked, don't be sad. Stay open and keep at it, and that same person will give you the help you need and deserve.
Advancing, and grieving. Constancy brings good fortune. This great blessing is received from their grandmother.
- Line 4 of 35 Advance
As you advance, it's important not to pile up wealth or power just for your own benefit, because that will block your progress.
Advancing like a field rat. Constancy is in danger.
- Line 5 of 35 Advance
To advance and, as you do, to contribute to others is a sign of greatness, and it will keep your progress going. There's no reason to regret what you've given along the way.
Regret vanishes. Loss or gain: don't be troubled. Going brings good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.
- Line 6 of 35 Advance
Make sure your advance doesn't run over other people. It's fine to clear the obstacles from your path, but without hurting anyone.
Advancing with the horns. Fit only for punishing one's own city. Danger, good fortune, no fault. Constancy brings distress.
- The judgment of 29 Water
Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.
There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.
