Transformation · lines 1, 4, 5, and 6
Advance becomes Initial Obstacles
What this change means
Clouds over thunder: the first, fourth, fifth and top lines move, setting Water above and Thunder below. Read the second and third lines of the resulting hexagram, 3 Initial Obstacles; they're the ones holding still. The second says help is coming despite the obstacles ahead, so move carefully until you feel safe enough to take it in. The third says obstacles right now aren't solved by acting, but by stepping back until conditions improve. From Advance, this is a stretch where the forward push needs to pause. The help you expected is still coming, only not yet. Hold back, stay careful, and don't plunge into the tangle. Watch for forcing a beginning that isn't ready. Letting things settle first tends to make the eventual start much smoother.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- Line 2 of 3 Initial Obstacles, which stays still
Obstacles are on the way, but help will come. Act with caution until you feel secure and can receive that help.
Stuck, turning in place; the horses of the team pull apart. Not a raider: someone come to ask for marriage. The young woman is constant and gives no promise; after ten years she gives it.
- Line 3 of 3 Initial Obstacles, which stays still
Right now obstacles aren't solved by acting: they're solved by stepping back until conditions improve.
Chasing the deer with no gamekeeper, only going deeper into the forest. The noble person sees the sign and would rather let it go. Going on: distress.
- The judgment of 35 Advance
A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.
The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.
- Line 1 of 35 Advance
If you don't get the help you need, don't keep looking for it in that place. Open yourself to other possibilities that will come your way.
Advancing, and pushed back. Constancy brings good fortune. If there is no trust, stay easy: no fault.
- Line 4 of 35 Advance
As you advance, it's important not to pile up wealth or power just for your own benefit, because that will block your progress.
Advancing like a field rat. Constancy is in danger.
- Line 5 of 35 Advance
To advance and, as you do, to contribute to others is a sign of greatness, and it will keep your progress going. There's no reason to regret what you've given along the way.
Regret vanishes. Loss or gain: don't be troubled. Going brings good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.
- Line 6 of 35 Advance
Make sure your advance doesn't run over other people. It's fine to clear the obstacles from your path, but without hurting anyone.
Advancing with the horns. Fit only for punishing one's own city. Danger, good fortune, no fault. Constancy brings distress.
- The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles
This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.
Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.
