Water becomes Abiding

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Mountain over mountain replaces water over water as four lines move, the second, third, fifth and top: the current stops, and stillness takes its place. The still first and fourth lines of 52 Abiding carry the counsel. The first says it's better to stop too soon than to take ill-advised steps. The fourth says you can remain calm and trust the universe to handle what's beyond you. So after struggling through obstacles, the invitation is to rest and stop pushing. This isn't defeat; it's the stance that fits the moment. Stay centered and steady, and wait for outer conditions to show you when it's time to act. Watch for the restlessness that makes stillness feel like failure. Calm confidence will serve you better than any move you could make now, and staying put is itself the way forward.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 52 Abiding, which stays still

Better to stop too soon than to take ill-advised steps.

Still the toes. No fault. Lasting constancy is favorable.

  2. Line 4 of 52 Abiding, which stays still

You're able to stay calm and trust that the universe will take care of things.

    Still the trunk. No fault.

  3. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  4. Line 2 of 29 Water

You're in a dangerous situation where you only get results in small matters. This isn't the time for great success.

In the pit there is danger. Seeking, a little is gained.

  5. Line 3 of 29 Water

It's time to stop, watch and act only when you're sure that moving forward will lead to success. Ask for inner guidance.

Coming and going: pit and pit. Danger, and depth besides. Entering the bottom of the pit. Do not act.

  6. Line 5 of 29 Water

You'll get out of the obstacles now if you follow the path of least resistance and, step by step, head toward your goal.

The pit does not overflow; it fills just to the level. No fault.

  7. Line 6 of 29 Water

Trying to escape the obstacles, you get more tangled if you keep doing things the wrong way and side with the wrong people.

Bound with braided cords, set among thorn thickets; three years and no way out. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.
