Water becomes Innocence

What this change means

Thunder moves under heaven as four lines change, the first, second, fourth and top, and the twisting pit gives way to straightforward simplicity. The still third and fifth lines of 25 Innocence give the guidance. The third asks you to watch and act at the right time, because even a good deed done at the wrong moment turns out badly. The fifth reassures you: if adverse things happen that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry, because little by little things straighten out and get back on course. So keep your motives clean and your timing careful. Not every setback is your fault, and not every good intention is welcome when it arrives. Watch for the urge to fix things right away. Wait for the right moment, act honestly when it comes, and let events that aren't yours to control sort themselves out.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 25 Innocence, which stays still

Watch and act at the right time, because a good deed done at the wrong moment turns out badly.

An undeserved calamity: someone tied up an ox; the traveler takes it, and the calamity falls on the villagers.

  2. Line 5 of 25 Innocence, which stays still

If adverse things happen to you that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry: little by little things will straighten out until they're back on course.

An undeserved illness. Take no medicine: there will be joy.

  3. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  4. Line 1 of 29 Water

You won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in the direction you're going, without watching outside circumstances.

Pit upon pit. Entering the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.

  5. Line 2 of 29 Water

You're in a dangerous situation where you only get results in small matters. This isn't the time for great success.

In the pit there is danger. Seeking, a little is gained.

  6. Line 4 of 29 Water

Obstacles will be overcome now only if you open up to help that seems minor but will make the difference.

A jug of wine, a bowl of grain besides, in clay vessels. The simple offering passes in through the window. In the end, no fault.

  7. Line 6 of 29 Water

Trying to escape the obstacles, you get more tangled if you keep doing things the wrong way and side with the wrong people.

Bound with braided cords, set among thorn thickets; three years and no way out. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
