Water becomes Opposites

What this change means

Fire above a lake: four lines move, the first, fourth, fifth and top, and the double pit becomes a situation where things pull in different directions. The still second and third lines of 38 Opposites carry the advice. The second says you can reach agreements with like-minded people you've lost touch with, using skillful means to bring those meetings about. The third adds that even when conditions go against you, even under attack, loyalty to yourself and to the people you admire leads to success. So the obstacles here involve difference and distance. Don't give in, and don't give up on connection either. Find creative ways to reach the people who share your values, and hold your ground when others oppose you. Watch for bitterness. Staying loyal to what you believe, while staying open, carries you through the friction.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

You can reach agreements with people like you whom you're not in touch with, using skillful means to bring those meetings about.

Meets their lord in a back lane. No fault.

  2. Line 3 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

Even if conditions turn against you and you're even attacked, staying true to yourself and to those you admire will lead you to success.

Sees the cart dragged back, the ox held fast; the driver, branded on the forehead, nose cut off. No beginning, but an end.

  3. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  4. Line 1 of 29 Water

You won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in the direction you're going, without watching outside circumstances.

Pit upon pit. Entering the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.

  5. Line 4 of 29 Water

Obstacles will be overcome now only if you open up to help that seems minor but will make the difference.

A jug of wine, a bowl of grain besides, in clay vessels. The simple offering passes in through the window. In the end, no fault.

  6. Line 5 of 29 Water

You'll get out of the obstacles now if you follow the path of least resistance and, step by step, head toward your goal.

The pit does not overflow; it fills just to the level. No fault.

  7. Line 6 of 29 Water

Trying to escape the obstacles, you get more tangled if you keep doing things the wrong way and side with the wrong people.

Bound with braided cords, set among thorn thickets; three years and no way out. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 38 Opposites

You're in a situation of opposition: the people around you are different from you, yet you need to share with them. This means that what you can achieve for now is small. Even so, don't give in. It matters that both you and they keep your own nature and contribute from there to a shared project.

    In small matters, good fortune.
