The Flame becomes Held Back

What this change means

Water on the mountain: four lines move, the first, fourth, fifth and top, and the clear double flame becomes a road that keeps getting harder. The still second and third lines of 39 Held Back give the guidance. The second says it's time to face the difficulties, even though they seem to grow as you advance; when what you do stays matched with inner integrity, success can come in the end. The third says the right thing is to step back from the obstacles and go back to ordinary life among those who love you, waiting until it's time to act. So there's a time to face and a time to withdraw, and both rest on integrity. Watch for pushing on when you should pause. Turn back to yourself, rest among those who care for you, and return to the work when it's time.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

It's time to face the difficulties, which seem to grow as you advance. Still, if your actions go hand in hand with inner integrity, you'll succeed in the end.

The king's servant, in hardship upon hardship, and not of their own doing.

  2. Line 3 of 39 Held Back, which stays still

    Going: hardship. Coming: a return.

There's clarity in what you do: your inner self guides you toward your goals. A generous attitude helps you, one that leads you to share your light, and this will increase your gains and achievements.

Suddenly, so it comes: blazing, dying, cast away.

  6. Line 5 of 30 The Flame

After a rise, expect a decline. If you stand firm and understand that this is life's natural rhythm, you'll recover.

Tears pouring down in streams, sighs of sorrow. Good fortune.

  7. Line 6 of 30 The Flame

If you recognize the mistakes in what you've done and make the corrections needed, you'll succeed.

The king sets out on campaign. There is merit: the chief's head is cut off, and the captives are not the chief's own people. No fault.

  8. The judgment of 39 Held Back

Every time you advance, something blocks you, forcing you to stop, step back, and look for help from like-minded people who give you their support. That way you'll get past the obstacles one by one until the final victory.

The southwest is favorable; the northeast is not. It is favorable to see the great person. Constancy brings good fortune.
