Observing becomes Shock

What this change means

Thunder doubles as four lines move, the first, fourth, fifth and top, and the calm watching of the starting hexagram meets a jolt. The two still lines of 51 Shock carry the reading. The second says hard situations may come, even losses, but there's nothing to fear: what you lose will return, and you'll be on the path of achievement again. The third says the blows you're taking now aren't caused by fate; they come more from within, and realizing this lets you correct them.

So observation turns inward under pressure. When something shakes you, look first at your own part. Losses here are not final, and much of the difficulty may be self-made. Watch for blaming circumstances or panicking over what you've lost; calm self-examination tends to show you the correction, and with it the way back.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 51 Shock, which stays still

Situations may come up that seem hard to face, and you may even suffer losses. There's nothing to fear: what you lose you'll get back, and you'll be on the path of achievement again.

Thunder comes: danger. Countless cowries are lost; one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase them: in seven days they are found.

  2. Line 3 of 51 Shock, which stays still

The blows you're taking right now aren't caused by fate. They come more from within, and that makes things harder. Once you realize this, you'll make the corrections and resolve the situation.

Thunder that stuns and stuns. If thunder sets one going, no disaster.

  3. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  4. Line 1 of 20 Observing

It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.

Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.

  5. Line 4 of 20 Observing

You can look at things with wisdom and bring light where there is darkness. This will bring you recognition.

Contemplating the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to be the king's guest.

  6. Line 5 of 20 Observing

If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.

Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.

  7. Line 6 of 20 Observing

If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.

Contemplating their life. For the noble person, no fault.

  8. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.
