What this change means

Fire above, the lake below: four lines move, the first, second, fourth and fifth, and the figure splits into opposites. The two still lines of 38 Opposites carry the reading. The third says that even if conditions turn against you, even under attack, staying true to yourself and to those you admire will lead to success. The top line speaks of isolation breeding confusion, so you fail to recognize friends and nearly strike at them, until the confusion clears and joining like-minded people brings success.

Observation is the key here. Isolation distorts what you see. Before you react to someone as an enemy, look again. Stay loyal to your values and to the people you respect, and give the fog time to lift. Watch for mistaking allies for rivals when you feel alone; reconnecting with kindred people tends to restore a clear view.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

Even if conditions turn against you and you're even attacked, staying true to yourself and to those you admire will lead you to success.

Sees the cart dragged back, the ox held fast; the driver, branded on the forehead, nose cut off. No beginning, but an end.

  2. Line 6 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

Isolation leads you into a moment of confusion where you don't recognize friends or allies; you're even about to attack them. But little by little the confusion clears, and joining with like-minded people will bring you success.

Alone in opposition: sees a pig covered in mud, a cart loaded with ghosts. First the bow is drawn; then it is set down. Not a raider: a wedding party. If on the way the rain comes, good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  4. Line 1 of 20 Observing

It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.

Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.

  5. Line 2 of 20 Observing

If your perception is subjective, you'll stay on the surface and never reach the heart of the situation.

Peeking through a crack. A woman's constancy is favorable.

  6. Line 4 of 20 Observing

You can look at things with wisdom and bring light where there is darkness. This will bring you recognition.

Contemplating the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to be the king's guest.

  7. Line 5 of 20 Observing

If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.

Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.

  8. The judgment of 38 Opposites

You're in a situation of opposition: the people around you are different from you, yet you need to share with them. This means that what you can achieve for now is small. Even so, don't give in. It matters that both you and they keep your own nature and contribute from there to a shared project.

    In small matters, good fortune.
