Observing becomes Darkness

What this change means

Light sinks into the earth as four lines move, the first, third, fifth and top. The two still lines of 36 Darkness carry the reading. The second says difficulties are growing and affect you directly, but firm resolve, acting for a greater good and contributing as you can will lead to victory. The fourth says you'll be allowed to see the causes of the hard situations you face, which helps you act quickly and withdraw to safety before adversity takes over.

Here observation becomes your protection in a dark time. See clearly what's behind the difficulty, and act on that understanding without delay. Keep your integrity, help where you can, and don't expose your light needlessly. Watch for denial when the signs are plain, or for staying too long once you've understood; timely insight and a timely step back can keep you safe.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 36 Darkness, which stays still

Difficulties are growing and circumstances affect you directly, but your firm resolve, acting for a greater good, and contributing as you're able will lead you to victory.

The wounded light: wounded in the left thigh. Rescued with a strong horse. Good fortune.

  2. Line 4 of 36 Darkness, which stays still

You'll be allowed to see the causes of the hard situations you're facing. This will help you act quickly and withdraw to safe ground before adversity takes complete control.

It enters the left side of the belly; it reaches the heart of the wounded light and goes out through the courtyard gate.

  3. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  4. Line 1 of 20 Observing

It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.

Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.

  5. Line 3 of 20 Observing

Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.

Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.

  6. Line 5 of 20 Observing

If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.

Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.

  7. Line 6 of 20 Observing

If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.

Contemplating their life. For the noble person, no fault.

  8. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.
