Conflict becomes The Flame

What this change means

Brightness doubled: four lines move, the first, second, third and fifth, and both trigrams of 6 Conflict become Fire. The still lines of 30 The Flame carry the reading. The fourth warns that a quick rise is short-lived unless inner strength and steadiness feed it. The top line says that recognizing your mistakes and making the needed corrections leads to success.

So the conflict opens into clarity, and clarity asks for honesty about your own part. If you come out ahead quickly, don't trust the speed; build the steadiness that makes it last. Look at where you went wrong in this dispute and correct it, without waiting to be told. Watch for a flash of victory that burns out, and for pride that won't admit an error.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 4 of 30 The Flame, which stays still

A quick rise, unless your inner strength and steadiness feed it, will be short-lived.

Suddenly, so it comes: blazing, dying, cast away.

  2. Line 6 of 30 The Flame, which stays still

If you recognize the mistakes in what you've done and make the corrections needed, you'll succeed.

The king sets out on campaign. There is merit: the chief's head is cut off, and the captives are not the chief's own people. No fault.

  3. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

There is sincere trust, but it is blocked. Caution: stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way to the end, misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.

  4. Line 1 of 6 Conflict

Even if the situation invites gossip, holding firm is your best move.

Not dragging the matter out. A few words against; in the end, good fortune.

  5. Line 2 of 6 Conflict

Withdrawing in time, even if it looks cowardly, is the best move right now.

Unable to win the lawsuit. Turning back, slipping away; the people of the town, three hundred households, come to no harm.

  6. Line 3 of 6 Conflict

What you've gained honestly can't be taken from you. Even if gossip comes up, don't be intimidated; hold firm.

Feeding on old virtue. Constancy is in danger; in the end, good fortune. If it serves in the king's affairs, no achievement of its own.

  7. Line 5 of 6 Conflict

If you've acted rightly, whoever has to make the decisions that involve you will decide in your favor.

    Lawsuit. Great good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 30 The Flame

There's clarity in what you do: your inner self guides you toward your goals. A generous attitude helps you, one that leads you to share your light, and this will increase your gains and achievements.

Constancy is favorable. Success. Raising a cow brings good fortune.
