Thrift becomes Passivity

What this change means

Lake and water both become Earth: as the first, second and fifth lines move, the figure turns entirely yielding, 2 Passivity. The two judgments have equal weight. 60 Thrift advises holding your resources in reserve for what's ahead, so that challenges find you ready and are easier to overcome; a restraint that turns harsh won't last, though. 2 Passivity says this isn't a time to take the lead. Let others guide you and keep working on your projects patiently. Both point to quiet strength. You're not being asked to make big moves but to stay steady, keep your reserves, and support what others are steering. That can feel like doing too little. It isn't. Patient, receptive work now tends to carry further than initiative would. Keep your limits gentle so you can hold them as long as needed.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 60 Thrift

It's a time to conserve your time, energy and resources so you're ready for what lies ahead. If you do, when challenges arrive you'll be prepared and will overcome them easily.

Success. Bitter measure cannot be kept up with constancy.

  2. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  3. Line 1 of 60 Thrift

Watch for the signs that tell you when it's time to stop.

Does not leave the courtyard inside the door. No fault.

  4. Line 2 of 60 Thrift

When it's time to move forward, hurry: hesitating without acting will bring trouble.

Does not leave the courtyard inside the gate. Misfortune.

  5. Line 5 of 60 Thrift

Accept the restrictions of the moment for yourself too, not only for others; this will lead you to success.

Sweet measure. Good fortune. Going earns esteem.
