Inner Peace becomes Union

What this change means

Water gathers over the earth as the first, second and fourth lines move, Earth replacing the lower Lake and Water the upper. Both judgments count the same. From the starting hexagram comes a reminder that calm is a working state, not a resting one: kindred company recharges you, but only clear goals keep the calm from going slack. The resulting hexagram, 8 Union, places success in joining with people aligned with your project, who support you. It also asks whether you have the qualities needed to carry it through, and suggests you can toss the coins again to see. Both stress good company. Seek the people who share your direction, but check your own readiness honestly. Peace is a strength here only if it keeps you moving toward something.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 58 Inner Peace

You're in a time of calm and inner peace that lets you achieve great things. Spending time with people whose energy is like yours will nourish and recharge you to reach your aims. Still, don't lose sight of your goals, or you'll slide into inertia.

    Success. Constancy is favorable.

  2. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.

  3. Line 1 of 58 Inner Peace

A state of calm and inner joy will help you stay centered and achieve what you want.

    Joy in harmony. Good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 58 Inner Peace

Take great care over whom you spend time with and what activities you choose, because if you let yourself be drawn into worldly things without cultivating your inner life, you'll stray from your goals.

Joy with trust. Good fortune. Regret vanishes.

  5. Line 4 of 58 Inner Peace

You're moving between serenity and indulgence. Indulgence leads to empty pleasure; serenity, to inner joy. That is the true path to success.

Joy that bargains, never at rest. Once the ill is set apart, there is gladness.
