The Traveler becomes Right Action

Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Water over wood, the image of the well, forms as the second line and the upper three change. The first and third lines hold, and in the resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, they frame the advice. The first says a low mood makes everything look bleak, so you miss opportunities and fail to draw help. The third says you have many talents you aren't using, so chances pass by. Coming out of The Traveler, you're in a better spot than you feel. The opportunities are here. Lift your spirits, look again, and use what you already have instead of searching for something new. Stop postponing. A well full of water does no good unless someone draws from it. Draw from your own.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  2. Line 3 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  3. The judgment of 56 The Traveler

It's a time of small achievements. Keep a light, flexible attitude. You may be facing a period of change, new places or situations that ask you to adapt while they settle: let go of attachments and be gracious as you make new connections and your situation takes hold.

Small success. For the traveler, constancy brings good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 56 The Traveler

You carry with you the resources you need to be secure wherever you are and whatever comes up. You'll draw help from simple, capable people.

The traveler reaches the inn, carries their goods close, and gains a young servant who is loyal.

  5. Line 4 of 56 The Traveler

Even though you can gain material rewards and comfort, avoid living in constant distrust and worry.

The traveler finds a place to stay and gets their goods and their axe. My heart is not glad.

  6. Line 5 of 56 The Traveler

If you can enjoy this passing situation and make the most of it, you'll achieve things.

Shoots a pheasant; one arrow is lost. In the end, renown and a mandate.

  7. Line 6 of 56 The Traveler

If you relax too much, forgetting that you're only passing through, and stop tending to your ultimate purpose, you'll run into problems.

The bird burns its nest. The traveler laughs first and wails aloud after. Loses the ox at Yi. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
