Abundance becomes Transition

What this change means

Fire climbs above Water when four lines move, the three lower ones and the top. The resulting hexagram is 64 Transition, and its steady fourth and fifth lines set the course. The fourth says it's time to act: be clear about your aim and go directly toward it, and progress can grow and last. The fifth says you get what you want, and can enjoy it and add to others' well-being. After Abundance, then, the picture is encouraging but unfinished. Things are coming together, though some pieces haven't fallen into place. Act with a clear aim, and stay alert for mistakes born of haste or immaturity, even after you've reached your goal. Hesitating at the last step is a risk too. Decide, move, and finish carefully.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 4 of 64 Transition, which stays still

The time for action has come. Define what you want and head straight for it: you'll make growing, lasting progress.

Constancy brings good fortune. Regret vanishes. With the force of thunder the land of Guifang is attacked; in three years comes a reward from the great kingdom.

  2. Line 5 of 64 Transition, which stays still

You get what you want; you'll be able to enjoy it and contribute to the well-being of others.

Constancy brings good fortune. No regret. The light of the noble person: there is sincere trust. Good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 55 Abundance

You're growing toward a period of satisfaction and abundance. It will last for a while, and when it ends, stay calm, without sadness or worry. Enjoy it while it lasts, and when it wanes, keep your spirits up and enjoy what you've achieved.

Success. The king reaches it. Do not grieve: the noonday sun is fitting.

  4. Line 1 of 55 Abundance

It's a very favorable time, but it asks for determined, energetic action from you to make the results greater.

Meets the lord who is its match. Even for ten days, no fault. Going earns esteem.

  5. Line 2 of 55 Abundance

Although you're resolved and conditions are good for getting what you want, the wrong people are standing in your way. If you keep doing what's right and don't let yourself be pulled off course, you'll succeed.

Full is the awning: at noon the Dipper is seen. Going earns suspicion and harm. If there is sincere trust that unfolds, good fortune.

  6. Line 3 of 55 Abundance

If your spirits sink, any obstacle, however small, will stop you from reaching what you want.

Full is the curtain: at noon the faint small stars are seen. The right arm is broken. No fault.

  7. Line 6 of 55 Abundance

Your pride may get in the way of what you want and delay your success.

Full is the house, the home screened over. Peering through the door: silence, no one there. For three years no one is seen. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 64 Transition

Things are coming together so that success can arrive and you can take on great projects, but some things still haven't fallen into place. So stay alert, so you don't make mistakes born of immaturity, or you'll drift from your goals. This can happen even after you've gotten what you want: you stop, you hesitate, and mistakes happen.

Success. The little fox has nearly crossed and wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.
