Abiding becomes Immaturity

What this change means

A spring breaks out at the foot of the mountain as the second and third lines move. The third line leads: you can't force yourself into stillness; trying only tears at you and smothers the heart, while true calm grows from slow breathing and a settled mind. The second line adds the limit of your control: you can stop in the right place, but not make others do so, and that can weigh on you. The resulting hexagram, 4 Immaturity, asks you to admit that you don't yet know enough in this area. Be humble, ask for guidance, and put the advice into practice. So stop straining, both against yourself and against others. Accept what you can't yet do, look for someone who knows more, and learn calmly.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 52 Abiding

The stillness you need now can't be forced. It has to come from a calm heart and unhurried breathing.

Still the waist; the flesh along the spine is torn. Danger: the heart is smothered.

  2. Line 2 of 52 Abiding

Right now you can only see to stopping yourself in the right place; you can't make sure others do the same.

Still the calves. It cannot come to the aid of what it follows; the heart is not glad.

  3. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.

  4. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.
