Shock becomes Abiding

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Mountain on mountain replaces thunder on thunder: four lines move, and the shaking comes to a full stop. With so much in motion, the still lines of the resulting hexagram give the guidance. In 52 Abiding, staying centered and steady is the best way forward; stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show it's time to act. Its second line says you can only make sure you stop in the right place yourself; you can't make others do the same. Its fifth line adds silence to stillness: loose talk could put you in danger. So hold your ground and watch your mouth, even when silence feels uncomfortable. Let others move as they will, and don't go beyond what's happening now.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 52 Abiding, which stays still

Right now you can only see to stopping yourself in the right place; you can't make sure others do the same.

Still the calves. It cannot come to the aid of what it follows; the heart is not glad.

  2. Line 5 of 52 Abiding, which stays still

You need not only to stay still and calm but also to keep quiet, because careless words could put you at risk.

Still the jaws; words come in order. Regret vanishes.

  3. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  4. Line 1 of 51 Shock

You see what's coming before it happens. That makes you worry ahead of time, but it also sets you looking for solutions, so when others start to worry, you'll already be focused on solving things.

Thunder comes, and there is dread; afterward, laughter and easy talk. Good fortune.

  5. Line 3 of 51 Shock

The blows you're taking right now aren't caused by fate. They come more from within, and that makes things harder. Once you realize this, you'll make the corrections and resolve the situation.

Thunder that stuns and stuns. If thunder sets one going, no disaster.

  6. Line 4 of 51 Shock

You can't see clearly what's holding you back, so the things you do don't settle matters. It's a time to wait until conditions change.

    Thunder sinks into the mud.

  7. Line 6 of 51 Shock

Your main enemy now is a lack of calm: catching the worry that fills the air over situations that aren't affecting you. If you can step away from that atmosphere and return to your center, things will settle.

Thunder, shiver upon shiver; the eyes restless and lost. Setting out brings misfortune. The thunder strikes not oneself but the neighbor: no fault. Over the marriage there will be talk.

  8. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.
