Shock becomes Immaturity

What this change means

A spring breaks out beneath the mountain as four lines move, the first, second, fourth and top, and the reading turns to the still lines of the resulting hexagram. In 4 Immaturity, you're asked to admit that you don't yet have the maturity you need in the area of your question, and to act with humility: ask for guidance and put what you're told into practice. Its third line warns against submitting to strong personalities who belittle you; that won't get you what you want. Its fifth line says that recognizing your lack of knowledge and seeking advice brings good results. So the shaking has exposed a gap. Learn from people who respect you, not from those who make you small, and let honest counsel guide your next steps.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 4 Immaturity, which stays still

To get what you want, don't submit to strong personalities who belittle you.

Do not take this woman: at the sight of a man of gold, she is no longer her own. Nothing is favorable.

  2. Line 5 of 4 Immaturity, which stays still

If you recognize your lack of knowledge in the area of your question and seek advice, you'll get good results.

    A child's ignorance. Good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  4. Line 1 of 51 Shock

You see what's coming before it happens. That makes you worry ahead of time, but it also sets you looking for solutions, so when others start to worry, you'll already be focused on solving things.

Thunder comes, and there is dread; afterward, laughter and easy talk. Good fortune.

  5. Line 2 of 51 Shock

Situations may come up that seem hard to face, and you may even suffer losses. There's nothing to fear: what you lose you'll get back, and you'll be on the path of achievement again.

Thunder comes: danger. Countless cowries are lost; one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase them: in seven days they are found.

  6. Line 4 of 51 Shock

You can't see clearly what's holding you back, so the things you do don't settle matters. It's a time to wait until conditions change.

    Thunder sinks into the mud.

  7. Line 6 of 51 Shock

Your main enemy now is a lack of calm: catching the worry that fills the air over situations that aren't affecting you. If you can step away from that atmosphere and return to your center, things will settle.

Thunder, shiver upon shiver; the eyes restless and lost. Setting out brings misfortune. The thunder strikes not oneself but the neighbor: no fault. Over the marriage there will be talk.

  8. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.
