Renewal becomes Right Action

What this change means

Three lines move, and the image becomes Water over Wind: a bucket lowered into a well. Renewal's judgment reminds you that success comes from taking each step at exactly the right time and from deciding clearly what has to change and what doesn't. The resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, adds a sharp warning. Opportunities are on your side, but if you keep postponing decisions, being in the right place at the right time won't help. It isn't about chasing something new; it's about using what you already have. Taken together, they say your renewal may not need a fresh start at all. Look at the resources, skills and relationships within reach and put them to work. Let go of what no longer serves, keep what still draws water, and act before the chance passes. Delay is the real risk here, more than change.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 49 Renewal

You're in a time of renewal, like shedding a skin. Open yourself to change and to new ways of doing things. Success lies in taking each step at exactly the right moment, and in weighing what needs to change and what doesn't, what is no longer doing its job. Don't be afraid to let it go: you need to make room for the new to arrive.

When the day has come, there is trust. Great success. Constancy is favorable. Regret vanishes.

  2. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  3. Line 1 of 49 Renewal

Don't rush into changes. Wait until conditions are favorable and you're clear about what you want to renew.

Bound fast with the hide of a yellow ox.

  4. Line 2 of 49 Renewal

When you've tried several things to solve something and nothing works, it's time for radical change.

When the day has come, the change is made. Setting out brings good fortune. No fault.

  5. Line 4 of 49 Renewal

Making the right changes at the right time will bring you success, as long as you rest on an inner certainty and your motives seek not only your own good but the well-being of others too.

Regret vanishes. There is sincere trust: the mandate is changed. Good fortune.
