Clearing Obstacles becomes Nourishment

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

The jaws open, thunder beneath the mountain: four lines move, and Clearing Obstacles becomes 27 Nourishment. Its third and fifth lines stay put, and the counsel is theirs. The third asks you to watch the balance between worldly food and higher food; tending only to the first, and overindulging, brings misfortune. The fifth says that knowing your limits in helping others, and asking how to help well, brings moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but real ones. With the obstacles gone, it's tempting to indulge, in comfort, in pleasures, or in rescuing everyone around you. The resulting hexagram asks you to care for your physical and spiritual nourishment and share what's good. So eat well, in every sense, without excess. Help others within what you can honestly give, ask for advice on how, and accept modest results as worthwhile.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 27 Nourishment, which stays still

  2. Line 5 of 27 Nourishment, which stays still

Being aware of your limits in helping others and asking advice on how to do it will bring you moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but it's something.

  3. The judgment of 40 Clearing Obstacles

    No fault.

  5. Line 2 of 40 Clearing Obstacles

  6. Line 4 of 40 Clearing Obstacles

It's important to let go of ties and loyalties that can't be trusted and that, if anything, will slow your progress, so you can move forward freely.

Untie your big toe: the friend arrives, and then there is trust.

  7. Line 6 of 40 Clearing Obstacles

Once you've strengthened your inner self, you can get through the obstacles and achieve your purpose with firm, decisive action.

The duke shoots at a falcon on top of the high wall and hits it. Nothing that is not favorable.

  8. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.
