Advance becomes Passivity

What this change means

When the fourth and top lines move, the upper Fire goes dark and the whole figure becomes Earth over Earth. The top line leads: your advance shouldn't run over anyone, and any edge you have belongs on your own house. The fourth adds that hoarding gain or power for yourself will block your way. Both lines describe the shadow side of success, force and grasping. The resulting hexagram, 2 Passivity, answers both: this isn't the moment to take the initiative. Let others guide you, keep at your projects with patience, and support rather than lead. That can feel like a step back after a bright run, but it's protective. Watch for the restless urge to grab control or press ahead. Yielding, and loosening your hold on what you've gathered, keeps the ground under you firm.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 35 Advance

Make sure your advance doesn't run over other people. It's fine to clear the obstacles from your path, but without hurting anyone.

Advancing with the horns. Fit only for punishing one's own city. Danger, good fortune, no fault. Constancy brings distress.

  2. Line 4 of 35 Advance

As you advance, it's important not to pile up wealth or power just for your own benefit, because that will block your progress.

Advancing like a field rat. Constancy is in danger.

  3. The judgment of 35 Advance

A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.

The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.

  4. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.
