Leaving Behind becomes Water

What this change means

Water upon water: four lines move, and both trigrams become the flowing pit. 29 Water's unchanged first and fifth lines carry the reading. The first warns that you won't get results by pushing recklessly ahead without watching what's around you. The fifth offers the way out: follow the path of least resistance and head toward your goal step by step. Having left one situation, you find yourself in a series of difficulties. They may come one after another, but a stream gets past obstacles by moving, not by stopping. Don't let fear freeze you. Don't force the hardest route either. Watch the terrain, take the opening that's there, and keep going. Retreat taught you to let go; now it teaches you to flow.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 29 Water, which stays still

You won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in the direction you're going, without watching outside circumstances.

Pit upon pit. Entering the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.

  2. Line 5 of 29 Water, which stays still

You'll get out of the obstacles now if you follow the path of least resistance and, step by step, head toward your goal.

The pit does not overflow; it fills just to the level. No fault.

  3. The judgment of 33 Leaving Behind

Leaving a path behind or stepping back right now isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, it will help you recover your strength and think carefully about the situation and how to set it right. Sometimes what looks like a loss turns into a gain, if you can let go of what isn't good for you and then pick up again in the right direction.

Success. In small things, constancy is favorable.

  4. Line 2 of 33 Leaving Behind

If you leave behind what doesn't serve you and hold fast to what is fair and right, you'll reach your goals in the end.

Bound with the hide of a yellow ox: no one can work it loose.

  5. Line 3 of 33 Leaving Behind

If, just as you're leaving something behind, you still let circumstances tempt you to stay, you'll need to find allies to make even a little progress.

A tethered retreat. There is sickness, danger. Keeping servants and maids: good fortune.

  6. Line 4 of 33 Leaving Behind

You need to leave this road behind without clinging and without regret, sure that it's the right thing. Otherwise, even if you let go, a grieving heart will keep you from opening up to what's new.

A retreat with affection. For the noble person, good fortune; for the petty person, not so.

  7. Line 6 of 33 Leaving Behind

You're in the right position to leave behind what has run its course. You can do it knowing it's right and without mourning the loss, and this will bring you great success.

A retreat at ease. Nothing that is not favorable.

  8. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.
