Leaving Behind becomes Great Achievements

What this change means

Heaven gathers inside the Mountain, and with four lines moving, what holds steady in 26 Great Achievements sets the course: its third and top lines. The third says the way is gradually clearing and it's time to act, though some situations will make you stop now and then; when they do, keep preparing for the next push. The top line is broader: things are in your favor, and help can come from above. Your retreat has stored up strength, and that strength is now ready to be used. This is a rare turn, from withdrawal to bold action, from caution to stepping outside your comfort zone. Don't rush past the halts that come up; use them to get ready. Move when the way opens and trust what you gathered while stepping back.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 26 Great Achievements, which stays still

The way is clearing little by little, and it's time to act; still, watch for situations that force you to stop at certain moments. At those times, keep preparing for when it's time to move forward.

Good horses in pursuit. Constancy in hardship is favorable. Each day, drill with the chariot and in defense. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. Line 6 of 26 Great Achievements, which stays still

Everything is in your favor right now; success is assured. You'll receive help from Heaven.

How wide the roads of heaven. Success.

  3. The judgment of 33 Leaving Behind

Leaving a path behind or stepping back right now isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, it will help you recover your strength and think carefully about the situation and how to set it right. Sometimes what looks like a loss turns into a gain, if you can let go of what isn't good for you and then pick up again in the right direction.

Success. In small things, constancy is favorable.

  4. Line 1 of 33 Leaving Behind

In hard times, when retreat can't be avoided, you'll suffer losses if you don't pull back quickly and actively and still hope to get something out of that road.

Retreating at the tail. Danger. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet.

  5. Line 2 of 33 Leaving Behind

If you leave behind what doesn't serve you and hold fast to what is fair and right, you'll reach your goals in the end.

Bound with the hide of a yellow ox: no one can work it loose.

  6. Line 4 of 33 Leaving Behind

You need to leave this road behind without clinging and without regret, sure that it's the right thing. Otherwise, even if you let go, a grieving heart will keep you from opening up to what's new.

A retreat with affection. For the noble person, good fortune; for the petty person, not so.

  7. Line 5 of 33 Leaving Behind

Withdrawing at the right moment, and doing it on friendly terms with the circumstances and the people you leave behind, will bring you success.

A fine retreat. Constancy brings good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 26 Great Achievements

It's a good moment to leave your comfort zone and take on new actions, beyond what you think you can do. Heaven favors unusual actions that will lead you to success, because you have the qualities needed.

Constancy is favorable. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.
