Leaving Behind becomes Immaturity

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

A spring breaks out at the foot of the mountain as four lines move. 4 Immaturity, the resulting hexagram, speaks through its quiet first and top lines. The first says help will come, but you have to actually apply what you're told, and to choose guides who ask a lot of you without dominating you. The top adds that accepting the consequences of your actions and correcting what needs it will help right now. Your retreat has brought you to a place where you don't yet have all the experience you need. That's not a failure; it's a starting point. Ask for advice, listen, and put it into practice. Own what went wrong instead of explaining it away. Humility here is practical: it's how you learn fast enough to move on well.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 4 Immaturity, which stays still

You'll receive help, but you have to apply what you're told. Choose guides who demand a lot of you without being domineering.

To wake the ignorant, it is favorable to use punishment and to take off the shackles. Going on this way: distress.

  2. Line 6 of 4 Immaturity, which stays still

Accepting the consequences of your actions and correcting what's needed will help you right now.

Striking the ignorant. Being a raider is not favorable; stopping the raider is favorable.

  3. The judgment of 33 Leaving Behind

Leaving a path behind or stepping back right now isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, it will help you recover your strength and think carefully about the situation and how to set it right. Sometimes what looks like a loss turns into a gain, if you can let go of what isn't good for you and then pick up again in the right direction.

Success. In small things, constancy is favorable.

  4. Line 2 of 33 Leaving Behind

If you leave behind what doesn't serve you and hold fast to what is fair and right, you'll reach your goals in the end.

Bound with the hide of a yellow ox: no one can work it loose.

  5. Line 3 of 33 Leaving Behind

If, just as you're leaving something behind, you still let circumstances tempt you to stay, you'll need to find allies to make even a little progress.

A tethered retreat. There is sickness, danger. Keeping servants and maids: good fortune.

  6. Line 4 of 33 Leaving Behind

You need to leave this road behind without clinging and without regret, sure that it's the right thing. Otherwise, even if you let go, a grieving heart will keep you from opening up to what's new.

A retreat with affection. For the noble person, good fortune; for the petty person, not so.

  7. Line 5 of 33 Leaving Behind

Withdrawing at the right moment, and doing it on friendly terms with the circumstances and the people you leave behind, will bring you success.

A fine retreat. Constancy brings good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.
