Innocence becomes Excesses

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Four lines move, the first three and the top, and Innocence becomes 28 Excesses, the lake rising over the trees. Counsel comes from the fourth and fifth lines, which stay still. The fourth says help from those below you is available, but if you take advantage of it without balance between giving and receiving, they'll withdraw and there will be loss. The fifth warns that cultivating ties with those above while neglecting those you lead limits success. The resulting hexagram calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've built from collapsing, starting with its foundations. Read alongside Innocence, the foundation is fair dealing. Strengthen it by giving as much as you take, and by caring for the people who carry the weight. Act boldly where it's needed, but keep your relationships honest in every direction.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 4 of 28 Excesses, which stays still

You can receive help from those under you now, but if you take advantage of it and there's no balance between giving and receiving, they'll withdraw their support and there will be loss.

The ridgepole rises. Good fortune. If there is something else, distress.

  2. Line 5 of 28 Excesses, which stays still

When you focus on strengthening ties with those above you but forget to pay attention to those you lead, your success will be limited.

The withered poplar puts out flowers. An old woman takes a young husband. No fault, no praise.

  3. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  4. Line 1 of 25 Innocence

Follow the way of the heart: it will always know what is right at each moment. This will lead you to success.

Without falseness. Going brings good fortune.

  5. Line 2 of 25 Innocence

Doing your work without thinking about what you'll get from it is the way to succeed.

Not plowing with the harvest in mind, not clearing land with the ripe field in mind: then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  6. Line 3 of 25 Innocence

Watch and act at the right time, because a good deed done at the wrong moment turns out badly.

An undeserved calamity: someone tied up an ox; the traveler takes it, and the calamity falls on the villagers.

  7. Line 6 of 25 Innocence

If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.

Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.

  8. The judgment of 28 Excesses

You're in a situation that calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've achieved from collapsing. Check and strengthen the foundations that hold up your projects, take innovative action and step out of your comfort zone. That way your success is assured; otherwise, loss can't be avoided.

The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.
