Loss, Then Gain becomes Passivity

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Every line goes yielding once the second, third and top lines move: the figure becomes Earth doubled. With three lines, the reading rests on both judgments. In the starting hexagram, decline has a cause that can be found and fixed, and recovery needs patience after the fix. 2 Passivity says this isn't the time to take the initiative; it's better to follow others' lead and keep working on your projects patiently. The bridge is receptiveness. Perhaps the loss came partly from pushing too hard or deciding alone. Now the correction is to let others guide you for a while. That isn't giving up. It's a way of repairing that doesn't depend on your force of will. Support, listen, carry your share, and let time do its part. Grabbing the lead again would repeat the pattern.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 18 Loss, Then Gain

You've made mistakes that have brought you into decline; still, admitting it and making the corrections needed will lead you back to success. Take time to reflect on what caused the loss and, once you've acted, give success time to arrive.

Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

  2. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  3. Line 2 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

Your losses come from weakness, from not persevering. Reflecting and taking up the path again with resolve will bring success.

Setting right what the mother spoiled. Constancy will not do.

  4. Line 3 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

Acting too rigidly in the past has led you to loss, but holding on to that rigidity to fix it won't help either.

Setting right what the father spoiled. A little regret; no great fault.

  5. Line 6 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

If you have high goals, beyond purely personal interests, and let them drive you, you'll succeed.

Serving neither kings nor lords; holding one's own work high.
