Loss, Then Gain becomes Darkness

What this change means

Light sinks into the earth when the first, second and top lines change. Both judgments carry this reading. 18 Loss, Then Gain sees decline as the consequence of mistakes, and recovery as the fruit of honest correction and time. 36 Darkness describes a dark period in which you have to live alongside the wrong people, and the way through is to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity and avoid showing your light openly. Together they suggest that the repair has to happen out of sight. This may not be the time to announce your changes or show what you're capable of. Fix what's yours quietly, keep your values intact, and don't give hostile people a target. Hard times pass. The corrections you make while they last will be ready when better days come.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 18 Loss, Then Gain

You've made mistakes that have brought you into decline; still, admitting it and making the corrections needed will lead you back to success. Take time to reflect on what caused the loss and, once you've acted, give success time to arrive.

Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

  2. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.

  3. Line 1 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

The loss came from being too rigid and wanting to do things the traditional way. If you can be flexible and innovate, you'll succeed.

Setting right what the father spoiled. There is a son; the late father is left without fault. Danger; in the end, good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

Your losses come from weakness, from not persevering. Reflecting and taking up the path again with resolve will bring success.

Setting right what the mother spoiled. Constancy will not do.

  5. Line 6 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

If you have high goals, beyond purely personal interests, and let them drive you, you'll succeed.

Serving neither kings nor lords; holding one's own work high.
