Adapting becomes Nourishment

What this change means

An open mouth appears, thunder below and mountain above, once the three upper lines have changed. Three lines, so the two judgments are weighed together. 17 Adapting asks you to sense when to take the lead and when to fall in behind, and to act from your real place either way. 27 Nourishment speaks of caring for your physical and spiritual nourishment, and of helping others grow through what you do: giving and receiving. The common ground is what you take in. Adapting well depends on following what feeds you, not what drains you, and on sharing what's good with those around you. The resulting image adds a quiet discipline: care with words, moderation in eating and drinking. Look at your sources, of food, ideas and company. Keep the ones that nourish, and pass the goodness on.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  2. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.

  3. Line 4 of 17 Adapting

Don't tie yourself to situations and people out of comfort or habit. Knowing how to choose who you keep around you, and stepping away from those you can tell aren't right, brings success.

Following brings a catch. Even with constancy, misfortune. There is sincere trust on the way; with clarity, what fault could there be?

  4. Line 5 of 17 Adapting

If a larger purpose drives you, a dream that inspires you, you'll get what you want.

Trust in what is good. Good fortune.

  5. Line 6 of 17 Adapting

You can win followers and support; even the most powerful people back you and recognize you.

Seized and bound, then tied fast still more. The king makes his offering on the western mountain.
