Adapting becomes Fleeting Success

What this change means

Moving lines two, four and five turn Thunder into Lake and the Lake into Earth: earth above the lake. This is a reading of two judgments. 17 Adapting is the art of adjusting to circumstances, of serving what the time requires instead of what you'd prefer. 19 Fleeting Success announces a period of luck and well-being that won't last long; after it, conditions change. If you read the signs and take precautions before the decline, you won't avoid it, but you can soften its effects. Put together, they call for a double attention. Enjoy the good season and make the most of it, but adapt early, before you're forced to. Evening comes in the starting image too, and it's exactly what this season asks you to foresee. Use the bright hours well, and use some of them to prepare for the evening.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  2. The judgment of 19 Fleeting Success

A period of luck, fortune and well-being is coming. Make the most of it, because it will last only eight months; after that, conditions will change. If you can pay attention, read the signs and take care and precautions before the decline arrives, you won't avoid it, but you will lessen its effects while circumstances change.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. When the eighth month comes, misfortune.

  3. Line 2 of 17 Adapting

Choosing very carefully who you surround yourself with makes your projects succeed.

Cling to the boy, lose the grown man.

  4. Line 4 of 17 Adapting

Don't tie yourself to situations and people out of comfort or habit. Knowing how to choose who you keep around you, and stepping away from those you can tell aren't right, brings success.

Following brings a catch. Even with constancy, misfortune. There is sincere trust on the way; with clarity, what fault could there be?

  5. Line 5 of 17 Adapting

If a larger purpose drives you, a dream that inspires you, you'll get what you want.

Trust in what is good. Good fortune.
