What this change means

The third, fourth and fifth lines move, turning Heaven below into Lake and Wind above into Fire, two elements that pull apart. Three moving lines put both judgments in balance. Small Things says the success you want is promised but not ripe; there are obstacles to resolve, and small actions suit this moment. The resulting hexagram, 38 Opposites, describes the obstacle more precisely: the people around you are different from you, yet you have to share with them, and for now only small things can be achieved together. Don't give in, and don't give up your nature. Each side keeps what it is and contributes from there to a shared project. Taken together, the judgments ask for a patient kind of cooperation. Accept the differences, keep your goals modest, and look for the narrow ground where your interests overlap. Small agreements can grow.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  2. The judgment of 38 Opposites

You're in a situation of opposition: the people around you are different from you, yet you need to share with them. This means that what you can achieve for now is small. Even so, don't give in. It matters that both you and they keep your own nature and contribute from there to a shared project.

    In small matters, good fortune.

  3. Line 3 of 9 Small Things

Trying to advance at any cost only brings bigger obstacles from outside.

The spokes come loose from the cart. Husband and wife glare at each other.

  4. Line 4 of 9 Small Things

If you act fairly, you may meet difficulties at first, but little by little the obstacles will fade until you reach your goal.

There is sincere trust. The blood goes, the fear leaves. No fault.

  5. Line 5 of 9 Small Things

Allying with others and being loyal in that alliance will bring success.

There is sincere trust, bound together as by a cord. Growing rich alongside the neighbor.
