Small Things becomes Conflict

What this change means

From held-back clouds to open dispute: the first, third and fourth lines move, the lower Heaven becomes Water, and heaven and water head opposite ways. With three moving lines, the two judgments are weighed together. Small Things holds a promise of success that isn't ripe; obstacles remain, and small steps are the fitting response. The resulting hexagram, 6 Conflict, describes a clash that action can't settle. Cleverness works better than force, and seeing that you can't resolve it right now is part of the way out. Letting events run their course and seeking advice from someone wise in the matter can help. Side by side, the judgments say the same thing from two angles: don't push. Keep your efforts small and your stance calm, think through how things began before you move, and resist the pull to win the argument now. Waiting here is a form of skill.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  2. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

There is sincere trust, but it is blocked. Caution: stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way to the end, misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.

  3. Line 1 of 9 Small Things

What's called for now is to fall back to situations where you have more control. This isn't a loss: it's a smart move.

Returning by its own way. What fault could there be? Good fortune.

  4. Line 3 of 9 Small Things

Trying to advance at any cost only brings bigger obstacles from outside.

The spokes come loose from the cart. Husband and wife glare at each other.

  5. Line 4 of 9 Small Things

If you act fairly, you may meet difficulties at first, but little by little the obstacles will fade until you reach your goal.

There is sincere trust. The blood goes, the fear leaves. No fault.
