Initial Obstacles becomes Decrease

What this change means

A lake at the foot of a mountain gives up some of its water to the heights: the second, fifth and top lines move, and the start becomes a time of trimming back. With three moving lines, the reading balances both judgments. On one side, 3 Initial Obstacles: don't press forward in person yet, work through people who can represent you, and stay ready to take back the lead. On the other, 41 Decrease: moderation and saving matter a great deal now.

Conserve resources and energy, avoid excess of every kind, and prepare, because a period of growth tends to follow. Put side by side, the two judgments describe a lean, careful phase. Spend less, delegate wisely, and keep your plans compact. Watch for frustration at the slowness, which can push you into waste. What you hold back now is what lets you take on larger things later.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  2. The judgment of 41 Decrease

It's a time for moderation and saving: conserving your resources and energy matters a great deal now. A period of growth will follow, but for now you need to stay aware and avoid excess of every kind while you get ready to take on big projects.

There is sincere trust. Great good fortune. No fault. Constancy is possible. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. What to offer? Two bowls will do for the offering.

  3. Line 2 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Obstacles are on the way, but help will come. Act with caution until you feel secure and can receive that help.

Stuck, turning in place; the horses of the team pull apart. Not a raider: someone come to ask for marriage. The young woman is constant and gives no promise; after ten years she gives it.

  4. Line 5 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Act with caution, step by step, without rushing.

Holding back its richness. In small things, constancy brings good fortune; in great things, even with constancy, misfortune.

  5. Line 6 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Despite the obstacles, don't give up or lose heart.

The horses of the team pull apart. Weeping blood, in endless streams.
