Initial Obstacles becomes Overflowing

What this change means

The lake rises toward heaven as the second, third and fourth lines move, and the tension of a hard beginning builds toward a point where it has to come out. Three moving lines put the two judgments in balance. 3 Initial Obstacles says don't act directly: work through allies who represent you, and watch for the right time to take back the initiative.

The resulting hexagram, 43 Overflowing, warns that pressure has piled up and could spill over, both in your own life and in your relationships. What's happening needs to be brought into the open, but with careful words that don't provoke. Generosity helps lower the tension. Together the judgments describe a delicate moment: let others carry part of the message, choose your words with great care, and act generously instead of forcefully. The danger isn't the truth itself. It's saying it all at once, without tact.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  2. The judgment of 43 Overflowing

It's a time of excessive buildup: some situations are about to get out of control and overwhelm you, both personally and in your relationships. You need to bring what's happening into the open, but without speaking about it directly; watch your words so you don't provoke reactions. It's a time to act generously to ease the tension that's there.

It is proclaimed in the king's court. A sincere cry: there is danger. Word comes from one's own city. It is not favorable to take up arms. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  3. Line 2 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Obstacles are on the way, but help will come. Act with caution until you feel secure and can receive that help.

  4. Line 3 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Right now obstacles aren't solved by acting: they're solved by stepping back until conditions improve.

Chasing the deer with no gamekeeper, only going deeper into the forest. The noble person sees the sign and would rather let it go. Going on: distress.

  5. Line 4 of 3 Initial Obstacles

It's wise to accept help now, even if it means leaving your pride behind.

The horses of the team pull apart. Seeking marriage. Going brings good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.
