Initial Obstacles becomes The Fall

What this change means

The mountain rests on bare earth, its slopes wearing away: as the first, fifth and top lines change, a difficult beginning slides into a season of loss. Three lines in motion give both judgments the same weight. The starting judgment keeps you from the front: let representatives you trust handle what you can't yet handle directly, and stay alert to the right time to resume control.

The resulting hexagram, 23 The Fall, describes obstacles where even sound words go unheard, and lesser people who misuse power gain ground. Pushing ahead won't help; generosity toward those beneath you can help you hold on while things change. Read together, the judgments ask for quiet endurance. Keep a low profile, protect what you can, and be kind to those who depend on you. Watch for arguing your case to people who won't listen. This phase tends to pass.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  2. The judgment of 23 The Fall

It's a time of obstacles and difficulties when, even if you're right, your words aren't believed. Lesser people who misuse power are on the rise, and you could become their victim. Recognizing this time without trying to push ahead, and being generous and giving toward those beneath you, will help you hold on while circumstances change.

It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  3. Line 1 of 3 Initial Obstacles

It's time to let others act for you.

Hesitating, circling by the rock. Abiding in constancy is favorable. It is favorable to install lords.

  4. Line 5 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Act with caution, step by step, without rushing.

Holding back its richness. In small things, constancy brings good fortune; in great things, even with constancy, misfortune.

  5. Line 6 of 3 Initial Obstacles

Despite the obstacles, don't give up or lose heart.

The horses of the team pull apart. Weeping blood, in endless streams.
