The Vessel of Nourishment becomes Nourishment

What this change means

Four lines move, and the figure becomes Mountain over Thunder, the shape of an open mouth. With so much changing, the guidance comes from the two lines of 27 Nourishment, the resulting hexagram, that stay still. The fifth says that knowing the limits of how you can help others, and asking advice on how to do it, brings moderate results: not extraordinary, but real. The top line says you gain the means to handle your own affairs and to help others with theirs, which brings great responsibility and great success. So the vessel's work now is feeding people. Start by being honest about what you can offer and where you need guidance. As your capacity grows, so will what's asked of you. Take the responsibility seriously, and let what nourishes you also reach those around you.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 27 Nourishment, which stays still

Being aware of your limits in helping others and asking advice on how to do it will bring you moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but it's something.

Against the norm. Abiding in constancy brings good fortune. The great river cannot be crossed.

  2. Line 6 of 27 Nourishment, which stays still

You gain the resources to take care of your own affairs, and you help others get theirs. This brings a great responsibility, but also great success.

From here comes sustenance. Danger; good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

  3. The judgment of 50 The Vessel of Nourishment

It's a time of change and adjustment, and it will happen naturally, without great upheaval, the way food cooks. Keep the flame lit: it's the enthusiasm that gives you the strength to keep going. And be clear about the resources you have, the way a cook chooses the ingredients. The change will come about little by little.

    Great good fortune. Success.

  4. Line 1 of 50 The Vessel of Nourishment

The change will happen under conditions that aren't ideal, but it will come to a good end.

The cauldron upended, feet in the air. It is favorable to tip out what has gone stale. A concubine is taken for the sake of her son. No fault.

  5. Line 2 of 50 The Vessel of Nourishment

If you do things the right way, don't fear the envy your achievements stir up.

The cauldron is full. My rival is ill and cannot come near me. Good fortune.

  6. Line 3 of 50 The Vessel of Nourishment

For now you're in a place where your talents and qualities aren't recognized. There's nothing to worry about: if you stay true to yourself and act with integrity, success will come in the end.

The ears of the cauldron are altered; its going is blocked. The pheasant fat is not eaten. When the rain comes, regret wanes. In the end, good fortune.

  7. Line 4 of 50 The Vessel of Nourishment

If you stray from your purpose and get involved with the wrong people, you won't succeed.

The cauldron breaks a leg and spills the prince's stew. Its form is drenched. Misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.
