Right Action becomes Advance

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Light rises over the earth as five lines change. Only the first line of the resulting hexagram stays still, and its advice is practical: if you don't get the help you need, stop looking for it in the same place, and open yourself to other possibilities coming your way. That's how 48 Right Action turns into 35 Advance. The starting hexagram warned against wasting opportunities; the resulting one announces growth and achievement, help from important people, and doors that open when you ask. The way forward is flexible persistence. If one door stays shut, don't stand there knocking. Look around, because others are likely opening. Ask without hesitating, accept what's offered, and contribute in turn to others' growth. Bringing your qualities to light by your own effort is part of this advance.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 35 Advance, which stays still

If you don't get the help you need, don't keep looking for it in that place. Open yourself to other possibilities that will come your way.

Advancing, and pushed back. Constancy brings good fortune. If there is no trust, stay easy: no fault.

  2. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  3. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  4. Line 3 of 48 Right Action

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  5. Line 4 of 48 Right Action

It's time to rethink and focus on the opportunities. If you focus on action and use your talents, you'll succeed.

The well is lined with brick. No fault.

  6. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  7. Line 6 of 48 Right Action

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 35 Advance

A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.

The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.
