Transformation · lines 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6
Advance becomes Right Action
What this change means
Only the bottom line stays still while the other five move, and the figure becomes Water over Wind: the shape of a well. In 48 Right Action, the resulting hexagram, that steady first line speaks of mood: when you're low, everything looks bleak: you don't see the opportunities in front of you and you don't draw help. Coming from Advance, where help and doors are on offer, this points at your own outlook as the obstacle. Opportunities are on your side, but they need you to notice and use them. Lift your attention from what's wrong to what's available. Make use of what you already have instead of looking for something new. Watch for gloom that keeps you from acting; putting off decisions can waste a good moment.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- Line 1 of 48 Right Action, which stays still
Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.
A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.
- The judgment of 35 Advance
A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.
The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.
- Line 2 of 35 Advance
Even if at first you don't get help from the person you asked, don't be sad. Stay open and keep at it, and that same person will give you the help you need and deserve.
Advancing, and grieving. Constancy brings good fortune. This great blessing is received from their grandmother.
- Line 3 of 35 Advance
You move forward together, with the support of others, and they'll back you in the areas where you find it hard to advance.
All agree. Regret vanishes.
- Line 4 of 35 Advance
As you advance, it's important not to pile up wealth or power just for your own benefit, because that will block your progress.
Advancing like a field rat. Constancy is in danger.
- Line 5 of 35 Advance
To advance and, as you do, to contribute to others is a sign of greatness, and it will keep your progress going. There's no reason to regret what you've given along the way.
Regret vanishes. Loss or gain: don't be troubled. Going brings good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.
- Line 6 of 35 Advance
Make sure your advance doesn't run over other people. It's fine to clear the obstacles from your path, but without hurting anyone.
Advancing with the horns. Fit only for punishing one's own city. Danger, good fortune, no fault. Constancy brings distress.
- The judgment of 48 Right Action
You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.
The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
