Darkness becomes Transition

What this change means

Five lines move, all but the fifth, and the figure becomes Fire above Water. That one remaining line, the fifth of 64 Transition, says you get what you want and can enjoy it while contributing to the well-being of others. Coming from Darkness, this is the light breaking through, though the resulting hexagram also cautions that not everything has fallen into place. Stay alert to mistakes born of haste or immaturity, which can happen even after you've reached your goal. Enjoy what arrives, and share it; that generosity is part of the good outcome. Watch for hesitating or loosening your attention right at the threshold. Things are coming together. Keep your care steady until they've fully settled, and let others benefit from what you've gained.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 64 Transition, which stays still

You get what you want; you'll be able to enjoy it and contribute to the well-being of others.

Constancy brings good fortune. No regret. The light of the noble person: there is sincere trust. Good fortune.

  2. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.

  3. Line 1 of 36 Darkness

Trying to move ahead right now will only show you obstacles. Keep persevering on the right path, the one your heart moves you along, without straying from your goal and advancing as far as you can.

The wounded light, in flight, lowers its wings. The noble person is on the road: three days without eating. There is somewhere to go; the host grumbles.

  4. Line 2 of 36 Darkness

Difficulties are growing and circumstances affect you directly, but your firm resolve, acting for a greater good, and contributing as you're able will lead you to victory.

The wounded light: wounded in the left thigh. Rescued with a strong horse. Good fortune.

  5. Line 3 of 36 Darkness

A small stroke of luck lets you move forward, but the obstacles aren't overcome yet, so don't celebrate too soon. Stay alert until they're fully defeated.

The wounded light on the southern hunt: the great chief is taken. Constancy must not be hurried.

  6. Line 4 of 36 Darkness

You'll be allowed to see the causes of the hard situations you're facing. This will help you act quickly and withdraw to safe ground before adversity takes complete control.

It enters the left side of the belly; it reaches the heart of the wounded light and goes out through the courtyard gate.

  7. Line 6 of 36 Darkness

If you keep persevering, quietly and without drawing attention, the bad situations and the people behind them will fall under their own weight.

No light, darkness. First it climbs to heaven; later it goes into the earth.

  8. The judgment of 64 Transition

Things are coming together so that success can arrive and you can take on great projects, but some things still haven't fallen into place. So stay alert, so you don't make mistakes born of immaturity, or you'll drift from your goals. This can happen even after you've gotten what you want: you stop, you hesitate, and mistakes happen.

Success. The little fox has nearly crossed and wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.
