Attraction becomes Passivity

Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Three lines move, the third, fourth and fifth, and both trigrams become Earth: the lake and the mountain flatten into open, yielding ground. The two judgments weigh the same. Attraction asks for a receptive stance, one that welcomes help. The resulting hexagram, 2 Passivity, takes that further: this isn't the time to take the initiative, and it's better to let others guide you and keep at your projects patiently. These two agree almost completely. Receptivity is the whole lesson here. Don't push, persuade or try to steer outcomes. Follow the lead of people you trust, carry your share steadily, and let your depth of character hold things together. It can feel like doing very little, but this kind of patient support tends to be exactly what the moment needs, and it leaves room for the right things to arrive.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 31 Attraction

You'll get good results to the extent that you stay open and receptive, which lets people come close who will support you and help you get there, generously and without self-interest.

Success. Constancy is favorable. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

  2. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  3. Line 3 of 31 Attraction

Don't act hastily, attaching yourself to the wrong people or chasing your dreams without thinking: this will take you off the path.

Contact at the thighs. Holding on to what follows. Going on: distress.

  4. Line 4 of 31 Attraction

Centering yourself in your heart and your inner resources will let what is right for you find you naturally.

Constancy brings good fortune. Regret vanishes. Restless, coming and going; friends follow your thoughts.

  5. Line 5 of 31 Attraction

An attitude of stillness, without trying to influence people or events, will bring you achievement.

Contact at the back. No regret.
