Water becomes Conflict

What this change means

The fourth and top lines move, and Heaven rises above the lower Water, the two pulling in opposite directions. The top line leads: if you try to escape the obstacles by doing things wrongly or siding with the wrong people, you'll get more tangled, bound as if by cords among thorns. The fourth line points to the better way: open up to modest help, a simple offering through a window, because that small thing can make the difference. The resulting hexagram, 6 Conflict, warns that a dispute is arising that action can't solve. Cleverness works better than force, and seeking the advice of someone wise helps you get clear of it. So don't fight your way out. Recognize that you can't settle everything right now, let some events run their course, and accept the quiet counsel or help that's offered. That's how the knot loosens.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 29 Water

Trying to escape the obstacles, you get more tangled if you keep doing things the wrong way and side with the wrong people.

Bound with braided cords, set among thorn thickets; three years and no way out. Misfortune.

  2. Line 4 of 29 Water

Obstacles will be overcome now only if you open up to help that seems minor but will make the difference.

A jug of wine, a bowl of grain besides, in clay vessels. The simple offering passes in through the window. In the end, no fault.

  3. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  4. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

There is sincere trust, but it is blocked. Caution: stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way to the end, misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.
