Water becomes Passivity

Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Both Water trigrams become Earth when the second and fifth lines move, and the rushing current sinks into soft, yielding ground. The fifth line leads: the pit doesn't overflow, it only fills to the level, and you'll get out step by step along the path of least resistance. The second line adds that in this danger you can only expect small gains, so don't measure the moment by big results. The resulting hexagram, 2 Passivity, takes the same lesson further. This isn't the time to seize the initiative. It's better to let others guide you and to keep working on your projects patiently. So set aside the wish to steer everything. Follow the easier current, accept modest progress, and let people you trust lead for a while. Receptiveness here isn't weakness; it's the shape that lets you carry the load until the obstacles thin out.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 29 Water

You'll get out of the obstacles now if you follow the path of least resistance and, step by step, head toward your goal.

The pit does not overflow; it fills just to the level. No fault.

  2. Line 2 of 29 Water

You're in a dangerous situation where you only get results in small matters. This isn't the time for great success.

In the pit there is danger. Seeking, a little is gained.

  3. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  4. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.
