Water becomes Loss, Then Gain

What this change means

Wind stalls below a mountain as the third, fifth and top lines move, and the pit becomes a picture of something that's gone bad and needs repair. In the pit, the counsel was to keep going and let trust, not fear, set your pace. The resulting hexagram, 18 Loss, Then Gain, adds an honest reckoning: mistakes you've made have brought you into decline, but admitting them and making the needed corrections leads back to success. Think through what led to the loss, and after you act, let results come in their own time. Balanced together, they say your way out begins with responsibility. Moving forward means fixing what you did wrong, not just pushing past its consequences. Watch for the urge to blame circumstances. Look clearly at the cause, correct it, and then be patient while the repair takes hold.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  2. The judgment of 18 Loss, Then Gain

You've made mistakes that have brought you into decline; still, admitting it and making the corrections needed will lead you back to success. Take time to reflect on what caused the loss and, once you've acted, give success time to arrive.

Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

  3. Line 3 of 29 Water

It's time to stop, watch and act only when you're sure that moving forward will lead to success. Ask for inner guidance.

Coming and going: pit and pit. Danger, and depth besides. Entering the bottom of the pit. Do not act.

  4. Line 5 of 29 Water

You'll get out of the obstacles now if you follow the path of least resistance and, step by step, head toward your goal.

The pit does not overflow; it fills just to the level. No fault.

  5. Line 6 of 29 Water

Trying to escape the obstacles, you get more tangled if you keep doing things the wrong way and side with the wrong people.

Bound with braided cords, set among thorn thickets; three years and no way out. Misfortune.
