What this change means
All three lower lines move, and Water under Water becomes Water over Fire: the danger that was doubled now sits above a flame that can bring it to a boil. Starting from the pit, the judgment of 29 Water says obstacles keep coming, yet you'll get past them if you keep moving and don't let fear freeze you; sincerity and a steady heart carry you through. The resulting hexagram, 63 After the End, balances that with a caution. You may get a passing success where everything seems to go your way, but a slack period tends to follow. Prepare for it ahead of time and you'll soften its effects. Held together, the two say: keep flowing through the difficulty, and when you come out the other side, don't relax completely. The crossing you make now is real, but treat it as a stage, not a finish line, and guard against trouble before it shows up.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 29 Water
Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.
There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.
- The judgment of 63 After the End
You're in a situation where you'll have a passing success: everything seems to be in your favor, and at the end comes a period of stagnation. If you prepare for it ahead of time, you'll be able to soften its effects.
Success in small things. Constancy is favorable. At first, good fortune; in the end, disorder.
- Line 1 of 29 Water
You won't get results if you keep acting recklessly in the direction you're going, without watching outside circumstances.
Pit upon pit. Entering the bottom of the pit. Misfortune.
- Line 2 of 29 Water
You're in a dangerous situation where you only get results in small matters. This isn't the time for great success.
In the pit there is danger. Seeking, a little is gained.
- Line 3 of 29 Water
It's time to stop, watch and act only when you're sure that moving forward will lead to success. Ask for inner guidance.
Coming and going: pit and pit. Danger, and depth besides. Entering the bottom of the pit. Do not act.
